sense of security

Post the RM2 mil robbery, security in UM have been quite a nuisance. Only the KL gate open for 24 hours, which is highly very inconvenient for people doing research (and we have lots of them in UM, obviously). The other gates open periodically, with the Damansara and Intan gates open at peak hours only. To think that UM actually have nothing to do with the robbery, aside from being the location where it took place. I mean, why all this tight security all of a sudden? Even lecturers; those with silver car stickers are stopped at the gates and questioned, should they enter the varsity after midnight. Tutors with brown (motorcycle) stickers aren't excluded, of course. I wonder where on my bike can I hide 2 million bucks should I steal it. What next? Shotguns for the guards? ..here's to all that complained to the media that UM's security was lousy; FUCK YOU. Next time you decide to say something, please make sure that your brain is attached.

Nabi kata tuntutlah ilmu sampai ke negeri Cina. Kita dok sebok nak tutup pintu universiti (macam Huzz la pulak ada footnote).

office or email?

I was just back from a certain MTE (Malaysian Tech Expo) where I met this cute girl whose phone number I asked. She gave me options; either her office number or her email ~sigh~ and I chose the latter, for whatever reasons.

Maybe I should have asked for her REAL address instead :p anyway..hope she have internet at home.. *fingers crossed*

what's that on your head?

At the most, I only wear my shirts 3 times before washing them. Jeans I wear a bit longer before washing. And as far as I'm concerned, I constantly buy these things; new, bundle, whatever.

But I only have ONE helmet, never wash it, put it (sometimes) on the floor, sit on it, leave it on my bike seat for God-knows-what to come over and stay there (am referring to microorganisms here) and the rain to soak, and I wear it on a daily basis. ON MY HEAD.

Today after quite some time procrastinating, I washed it. Yes, I WASHED MY HELMET. At first I only intended to wipe it a li'l bit. I applied some water to the part where the helmet meets my forehead to make it damp and used some facial cotton to wipe it. For those of you who're not in the know, facial cottons are white (or supposed to be white). And as soon as I wiped it, as if by magic, the facial cotton turned brown; waaaay browner than your average cigarette stubs. For a while I thought if I'd dunk the facial cotton in plain water, it'd make a decent impression of Nescafe 'O.' It was THAT brown.

Alas, I finished my washing. OK I didn't finish it. Just the part where my forehead meets the helmet. It took me like half an hour. Now I've a helmet which is damp where it meets the forehead. ~sigh~

conversations with a nephew

nephew:pacik nak pegi mana ni? Pacik nak pegi sekolah ke? Ijat pegi sekolah besok
me:ha'a pacik nak pegi sekolah. Pacik nak pegi universiti
nephew:universiti? Pacik belaja apa kat universiti?
me:pacik belaja komputer
nephew:waaa. Pacik belaja komputer ke? Ijat kat sekolah belaja buat kerja. OK pacik bye! (runs downstairs to finish his homework)

I, a (soon to be) 26 year-old am learning computer science. Well, sort of. Put more precisely, I'm doing something related to computer science. And my 6 year-old nephew is learning how to do work. At school. A 6 year-0ld. Sadly, I think that's what kids learn to do at schools today; how to do work. They're fed with enormous amount of 'information' and 'tips' and 'advice' and taught; more than anything, how to memorize without much knowledge of 'why the hell do I need to know these stuffs?'

I teach physics and when kids today do theis physics' experiments (or whatever experiments, for that matter), they just do it. They read their lab manual, learn how things should be (properly) done, and just do it. Then they'll ask me; 'apa kesimpulan dia a, bang?' And I do not think that this is merely because of laziness. When I was 18 I was lazy too -for the record; I still am (lazy, not 18)- but I always know how conclusions are derived; what I learnt when I did the experiments.

A system of 'these are the facts, now start memorizing, dammit!' might very well lead to a frightening conclusion. Now don't you 'apa kesimpulan dia a, bang?' me.
